The Hamsa hand
The Hamsa hand is an ancient middle eastern amulet symbol used in many cultures, it has many different meanings, but across all cultures it is a sign that symbolizes protection and brings its owner happiness, luck, good health, and good fortune.
The Hamsa symbol is often worn as jewellery or within the home to protect against any destructive negative energies. particularly those of the Ayin Ha’ra,’ also known as the evil eye. considered to be the sum of destructive energies that come from negative emotions in the world.
About the Evil Eye
The evil eye is a look given to inflict harm, suffering, or some form of bad luck on the person that it is cast upon. Giving someone “the evil eye” is a look which clearly states that one intends for something bad to happen to the other person, either out of jealousy or pure malice. It is believed by many cultures that the look is powerful enough to bring about actual disaster for the unfortunate person that is the receiver of the glare.
The hamsa offers protection against the potential negative energy, commonly being given by envious glares from those with ill intentions.
Connection to the Chakras and Elements
In Buddhism and Hinduism, the hamsa takes on a different meaning. For Hindus and Buddhists, the hamsa represents the chakras and the five senses and their associated mudras (hand gestures) that re-direct energy flow throughout the body.
The word “Hamsa” means “five,” representing the fingers of the right hand. Each finger connects to an element and chakra:

There are two ways to display the Hamsa:

When the Hamsa hand is facing up, it is a powerful sign of protection against evil, jealousy, and our own insecurities. Often, in this position, the fingers are spread apart to ward off evil.
Hand Facing Down / Varada Mudra
When the Hamsa hand is facing down it invites the energy of the universal to flow freely and brings positive good energy and luck into your home. Welcoming abundance, prosperity, fertility, and joy to fill your life. Hand facing down also answers to prayers and manifestations. Often, in this position, the fingers are closed together to bring good luck.
